Chapter 20
k
We found Kiki hunkered down in front of her laptop, bless her heart. We watched over her shoulder for a few minutes as she was researching hypnotism. I took a deep breath and tapped her on the shoulder. She about shot out of her chair, looking around wildly.
Now I felt bad that I scared her.
I glanced at Teddy then closed my eyes and concentrated on giving my ghost self substance in the real world. When I opened them, Kiki was staring at me with big eyes and an open mouth.
âLaurel?â
She had that fight-or-flight look on her face, and I reached out toward her. Kiki, donât be scared. Itâs me.
She put a hand over her mouth, her big eyes still visibly gaping at me.
You said you wanted to see me. I can disappear again if you want me to.
She shrank back into her desk chair, never taking her eyes off me. I could see the fear was still there.
I promise I wonât hurt you. Iâve been practicing and I wanted to see if I could make you see me. I waved toward the laptop. And I wanted to see if you figured out how to hypnotize us.
âUm, no,â she stammered, then cleared her throat. âThere are some procedures we can try. Of course, none of them are directed toward ghosts.â She was warming to her topic. âLook here.â She swung toward her desk and pulled the laptop closer. âThis website mentions some tools we can use, like a candle and a crystal. The crystal should be on a chain so we can swing it back and forth in front of your eyes while you concentrate on it.â
I wanted to hug her. My best friend was back. Not that she was the one who went away, but you know what I mean.
âWhereâs your boyfriend?â Kiki asked. âIs he here too?â
Teddy, you try it now and see if you can make yourself visible.
âYes, because Iâm dying to see what you look like,â Kiki said, then made an embarrassed cough. âI mean, not dying but justââ
Itâs okay, Kiki, I said. We get it. Weâre not offended.
Teddy closed his eyes and concentrated.
See anything yet? I asked Kiki.
âNot yet. Do you think itâs going to work?â She looked in the direction I had been speaking, not sure where Teddy might actually be. âWhere is he?â
I stood right next to Teddy and pointed, leaning over and planting a kiss on his cheek.
âAh,â she said and stared at the empty air at my side. I could feel both of their focused attention on the task.
âWait! I think I see something,â she said. I could see Teddy tighten his jaw and try a little harder.
She jumped up and clapped her hands. âHeâs here!â
I laughed. Kiki, this is Teddy. Teddy, meet Kiki.
She giggled. âHeâs really cute.â
Thanks, I said. But heâs not really my boyfriend. I mean, he kind of is, but weâre ghosts so I donât know how it works.
I glanced at Teddy. He hadnât spoken since Iâd introduced them.
